Hind Rajab’s Killer Killed in Lebanon

An Israeli battalion commander whose unit became internationally associated with the killing of Palestinian child Hind Rajab in Gaza has been killed during fighting in southern Lebanon. According to the Israeli military, Lt. Col. Dor Ben Shimchon, commander of the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade, was killed alongside three other soldiers after their tank was targeted near Kfar Tibnit in southern Lebanon.

The 52nd Battalion gained worldwide notoriety following the killing of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl whose death became one of the most widely recognised symbols of the suffering of Gaza’s children during Israel’s war on the enclave. Investigations and human rights groups have linked the 401st Armored Brigade to the attack that killed Hind, six members of her family and two paramedics who were sent to rescue her.

On January 29, 2024, Hind was fleeing Gaza City with relatives when their vehicle came under fire in the Tel al-Hawa area. Most of her family members were killed instantly. Trapped inside the bullet-riddled vehicle, Hind spent hours on the phone with emergency dispatchers, pleading for help while surrounded by the bodies of her loved ones. A Palestine Red Crescent ambulance was later dispatched after coordination efforts, but the ambulance itself was struck before reaching her, killing the two paramedics onboard. Twelve days later, rescuers found Hind, her family members and the medics dead.

The case sparked outrage around the world. Hind’s final calls for help were shared widely across international media and social media platforms, turning her into a symbol of the human cost of the war in Gaza. Universities, activists, human rights organisations and legal groups invoked her name in campaigns demanding accountability. A Belgium-based organisation, the Hind Rajab Foundation, was later established in her memory to pursue legal action against individuals accused of war crimes committed against Palestinians.

Independent investigations challenged Israeli claims regarding the incident. Analyses by Forensic Architecture, media organisations and human rights groups concluded that Israeli tanks were present at the scene and that the family vehicle was struck by hundreds of rounds of gunfire. Investigators also found evidence suggesting the ambulance sent to rescue Hind was deliberately targeted despite coordination efforts. Several legal experts and rights organisations have argued that the incident may constitute a war crime.

Hind’s killing occurred amid Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has caused devastating human losses and widespread destruction across the territory. Palestinian health authorities report that tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed and many more wounded since the war began in October 2023, with women and children making up a large share of the casualties.

Although a ceasefire was reached in Gaza in October 2025, deadly incidents have continued. Gaza’s Health Ministry says that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire came into effect, while several Israeli soldiers have also been killed during the same period. Large parts of Gaza remain devastated, and diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting end to the conflict continue amid ongoing violence and displacement.

The death of the 52nd Battalion commander has once again drawn international attention to Hind Rajab’s case, nearly two and a half years after the six-year-old’s desperate pleas for rescue were heard around the world.
