The newly upgraded section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé will be opened to the public from 4:00 p.m. today, following the completion of the remaining construction work.
Housing, Land and Urban Development Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib made the announcement after attending a tree-planting ceremony at the newly developed parking area along the road.
The minister said the road would be opened for public use as soon as the work is completed, without a formal inauguration ceremony.
The tree-planting project is part of efforts to improve the appearance and usability of Malé’s waterfront. Palm trees and flowering plants are expected to be added to further enhance the area and create a greener public space.
Meanwhile, preparations are also underway for the wider redevelopment of roads in Malé and Villimalé. Survey work has already begun under a road improvement programme funded through grant assistance from the Chinese government.
The redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is a key component of the government’s broader plans to modernise Malé’s transport infrastructure. The project includes widening the road, installing new quay walls, upgrading drainage and utility systems, constructing pedestrian walkways and developing parking facilities capable of accommodating approximately 500 motorcycles.
The current phase covers an 830-metre stretch of the road, including 737 metres of sheet piling. Once fully completed, the project is expected to improve traffic movement, reduce flooding and create additional berthing space along Malé’s northern waterfront.
