The United States has launched a new round of strikes against Iran, with explosions reported across several strategic locations overnight as the conflict entered its tenth consecutive night. US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had begun a “new round of strikes” at 4 p.m. ET on the orders of the Commander in Chief, saying the attacks were intended to further degrade Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest strikes were concentrated across southern Iran and areas surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes. Iranian media reported explosions on Qeshm Island, while multiple explosions were also heard in Chabahar and Konarak in Sistan-Baluchestan province, where local reports said at least 14 explosions were recorded across the two southeastern cities. Further blasts were reported in Bandar Abbas and near Sirik in Hormozgan province, both strategically located along the Strait of Hormuz. An additional explosion was reported in the central city of Isfahan, while near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, Iranian media said air defence systems were activated as the attacks continued. Authorities later said the sounds heard in the area were caused by those defensive systems.
Amid the strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it intercepted a US cruise missile over Rudbar-e-Jonubi in Kerman province, according to a statement carried by the Fars news agency. Jordan’s armed forces also announced that they had intercepted three missiles launched from Iran, according to the country’s state television, though no further details were immediately released regarding their intended targets.
Regional tensions also expanded beyond Iran after Iran-linked Houthi rebels announced a blockade on Saudi Arabia, threatening maritime navigation to Saudi ports. Saudi Arabia condemned the move, with its Foreign Ministry rejecting the announcement and describing the group’s claims as “baseless”.
The latest developments represent another major escalation in the conflict, with military activity spanning southern Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and neighbouring countries. As US strikes continue against Iranian military infrastructure and tensions spread across the region, concerns remain high that the conflict could draw in more countries and further threaten security in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
