Justice Hussain Shaheed has been elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), the commission announced on Wednesday.
According to a statement shared by the JSC, Justice Shaheed, who represents the Supreme Court on the commission, was elected to the position during a meeting held today.
Justice Shaheed joined the JSC as a member on 7 April 2025.
The deputy chair position became vacant following the resignation of Yazmeed Mohamed last month. Yazmeed had served on the commission as a presidential appointee.
Yazmeed was appointed to the JSC in February 2025 after replacing former member Mohamed Sameer. His resignation came amid controversy surrounding an audio recording circulated on social media, which allegedly contained remarks related to the recent local council elections and a criminal case involving drug-related offences.
With Shaheed’s election, the JSC has now filled the vacant deputy chair position as the commission continues its oversight of the judiciary.
