Pakistan and Kuwait are holding discussions on establishing a defence agreement, according to sources familiar with the matter. The proposed arrangement would focus on strengthening cooperation in the security sector and increasing financial support for Pakistan’s economy.
Although the talks are still at an early stage, sources said the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran could create challenges for the negotiations.
Kuwait is reportedly seeking a defence partnership with Pakistan similar to the agreement Islamabad has established with Saudi Arabia. The potential deal could include the deployment of thousands of Pakistani troops, the provision of naval vessels and drones, and support in developing Kuwait’s defence capabilities.
However, sources said Pakistan is not currently considering sending troops to Kuwait. While Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have maintained a long-standing strategic relationship, there are questions over whether Islamabad would be willing to provide the same level of military support to Kuwait.
Defence agreements have become an important tool for Pakistan as it seeks to expand financial cooperation with Gulf countries. Islamabad is particularly interested in strengthening ties with Kuwait to increase its energy reserves and secure greater economic support.
Kuwait is also exploring the possibility of establishing a bonded fuel storage facility with Pakistan. If successful, the discussions could expand beyond the existing diesel supply agreement between the two countries.
Pakistan’s military capabilities have made it a trusted security partner for several Gulf states. However, analysts say Islamabad must carefully consider the risks involved in taking on greater security responsibilities in the region, especially as many Gulf countries remain concerned about relying heavily on US defence support.
With the US military campaign against Iran raising regional tensions, sources say efforts to establish closer defence cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait could gain further momentum.
