The Maldives has strongly condemned the drone attacks launched yesterday against oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, reaffirming its support for the Kingdom’s security and stability.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Defence, the attacks targeted oil infrastructure in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province as well as the capital, Riyadh. The ministry said Saudi air defences successfully intercepted and neutralised the drones before they could reach their intended targets. It added that the drones were launched by Iran-backed armed groups operating from Iraq.
In a statement issued today, the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attacks as a serious threat to regional peace and stability, condemning them in the strongest possible terms.
The Maldivian government also reiterated its unwavering solidarity with Saudi Arabia, stressing that the Maldives stands firmly with the Kingdom and supports all measures aimed at safeguarding its security, sovereignty and stability.
The attempted attacks come roughly two weeks after the United States and Iran halted their recent exchange of military strikes. Following the ceasefire, Iran had stated that it would suspend attacks against countries aligned with the United States.
Despite that announcement, the latest attempted drone strikes targeting Saudi Arabia have raised fresh concerns over regional security and the risk of renewed tensions in the Middle East.
