The Elections Commission (EC) has officially dissolved The Democrats and the Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party after both parties failed to maintain the minimum membership threshold required by law.
According to the EC, political parties are required to have at least 3,000 registered members to remain active under the Political Parties Act. The two parties were unable to reach the required membership count within the deadline provided by the commission, resulting in their deregistration effective from today.
The Democrats was formed by former President Mohamed Nasheed and his supporters following a split from the Maldivian Democratic Party. Although the party contested the presidential election and later participated in parliamentary elections, it was unable to secure significant electoral success, with none of its candidates winning seats in Parliament.
In recent months, Nasheed and many of his supporters have rejoined the MDP. Nasheed is currently campaigning in the party’s chairperson election.
The EC stated that both parties have now been officially removed from the register of political parties in the Maldives.
