The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Maldives, particularly in the field of maritime security, as the island nation marks its 61st Independence Day.
In a statement issued to commemorate the occasion, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations to the Maldivian people on behalf of the United States, while underscoring Washington’s desire to expand bilateral ties in the years ahead.
Rubio noted that 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Maldives, describing the milestone as an opportunity to further deepen the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
He said the United States looks forward to broadening cooperation with the Maldives on key areas, particularly maritime security and efforts to preserve a stable and secure Indian Ocean region. Rubio also recognised the Maldives’ important role in supporting peace, stability and security across the Indian Ocean.
“The United States and the Maldives celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations this year, and we look forward to growing our partnership on key issues related to maritime security and preserving a stable Indian Ocean region,” Rubio said in the statement.
The Secretary of State stressed that Washington remains committed to strengthening collaboration with the Maldives in areas of mutual interest, reflecting the importance the United States places on its relationship with the Indian Ocean nation.
Concluding his message, Rubio conveyed the best wishes of the American people to the people of the Maldives as they celebrate Independence Day.
