President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives currently lacks what he described as a “responsible opposition,” adding that opposition parties should not reject every government policy without considering its benefits to the country.
Speaking during PSM’s “Nation Chat” programme on Thursday night, President Muizzu said his administration remains committed to improving the well-being of the Maldivian people by promoting prosperity, happiness and better living conditions across the country.
He emphasized that the government would continue working towards those goals throughout its term.
The President said opposition parties are free to fulfill their democratic responsibilities, but criticized some opposition groups for making what he described as “nonsensical” statements without properly considering the realities and intentions behind government policies.
According to President Muizzu, a responsible opposition should hold the government accountable while also supporting initiatives that positively impact the public and the nation.
“There is no responsible opposition in this country now,” the President said, adding that a constructive opposition would acknowledge and cooperate with policies that benefit citizens and national development.
President Muizzu further stated that accountability should apply to both the government and the opposition in order for democracy to function effectively. He said political activities driven by revenge or personal interests weaken democratic values and national progress.
He also reiterated that his administration’s priorities include serving all citizens equally, upholding the Constitution, maintaining peace and security, and protecting Islamic values.
The President claimed that attempts by certain political groups to create unrest in the country are not aligned with democratic principles, adding that the public would ultimately recognize such actions as irresponsible.
