A search operation is underway after a Maldivian man who entered the sea near the Hulhumalé reef area was reported missing.
Police stated that the incident was reported at around 18:30 this evening after a Maldivian man entered the water near Stelco in Hulhumalé to tie a rope and subsequently disappeared. No further information regarding the individual has been released.
According to police, the search efforts are being conducted jointly by the police and the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard.
The incident comes as rough weather continues to affect Malé and several parts of the country. Strong winds and rough seas have been reported in recent days, prompting authorities to advise vessels operating at sea to exercise extra caution. The missing man is believed to have been involved in such work at the time of the incident.
As rainy season’s conditions intensify, rough weather is expected to persist through tonight and tomorrow.
