Home Minister Ali Ihusan has stated that the Maldives has achieved significant progress in addressing issues related to foreign workers under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The minister made the remarks in a post shared on X following the completion of biometric data collection for 98 percent of expatriate workers living in the Maldives under “Operation Kurangi,” an initiative launched by President Muizzu to find a long-term solution to undocumented migrant issues in the country.
Under the operation, authorities collected fingerprints and photographs of foreign workers while also providing opportunities for undocumented migrants to regularize their status legally. According to the minister, the number of expatriates who have now been regularized has increased to over 60 percent.
Minister Ihusan said resolving foreign worker-related issues was one of the key priorities assigned to the Home Ministry from the very beginning of President Muizzu’s administration. He added that the milestone was achieved through extensive efforts carried out over the past two years by the ministry and associated state institutions.
He also thanked all institutions and individuals involved in the operation for their contribution and cooperation.
The minister further noted that the issue of undocumented migrants had remained unresolved under previous administrations and had evolved into a national concern. However, he stated that the current government had managed to make major progress on the matter within its first two years in office.
