The government’s Ras Malé City project has reached a major milestone, with 62 percent of the planned land reclamation now completed, making the reclaimed area larger than any existing island in the Maldives.
Deputy Minister of Housing Mohamed Naashid said in a post on X that work on Ras Malé, the government’s largest land reclamation project to date, is progressing rapidly.
Of the 1,150 hectares planned for reclamation under the project, 716 hectares have already been completed. This makes the reclaimed area 107 hectares larger than L. Gan, which currently covers approximately 609 hectares and is regarded as the largest island in the Maldives.
The land is being reclaimed at Fushidhiggaru Falhu, which has been divided into segments and assigned to different companies. The project is described by the government as the largest urban development project in Maldivian history.
According to the government, Ras Malé is being designed as an eco-friendly city based on a completely different urban concept. The reclaimed land will be developed with housing units and large-scale apartment projects.
The government plans to allocate a total of 25,000 residential plots in Ras Male’. The allocation will take place in phases, with 15,000 plots planned for the first phase. Applications for the first phase have already been opened, and a large number of applications have been received.
The Housing Ministry said the process of verifying the information submitted by applicants is expected to be completed by the end of December. Once that process is finished, the government expects the entire land reclamation project for Ras Male’ to be completed.
