PayPal Officially Launches in Maldives

PayPal services have officially commenced in the Maldives through a new integration with Ooredoo m-Faisaa, marking a significant milestone for the country’s digital economy.

The launch was announced by the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, which described the development as a major step toward connecting Maldivian entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses to global digital markets.

The official launch ceremony was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed, senior representatives from PayPal and Ooredoo, government officials, business leaders, and members of the creative industry.

According to the ministry, the integration was achieved following extensive discussions between the Government of Maldives and PayPal, enabling Maldivian users to access PayPal services through Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa platform.

Speaking at the event, Minister Mohamed Saeed said the launch removes a long-standing barrier that had limited Maldivian participation in the global digital economy. He noted that the service will create new opportunities for freelancers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and small businesses seeking access to international markets.

President Muizzu described the arrival of PayPal in the Maldives as the fulfillment of a key commitment made during his 2023 presidential campaign. He said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader digital transformation agenda under the “Maldives 2.0” roadmap and supports the country’s long-term Vision 2040 development goals.

The ministry stated that the integration will strengthen the domestic digital economy by supporting e-commerce growth, expanding opportunities for international trade, and increasing foreign currency inflows into the country.

Officials also highlighted that the service is expected to provide Maldivian creators, freelancers, and businesses with a more direct and secure way to participate in the global marketplace.
