President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening food safety systems and ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all citizens, marking World Food Safety Day.
In a statement shared on social media, President Muizzu highlighted the importance of food safety in preventing foodborne illnesses, protecting public health and supporting sustainable development. He noted that many food-related diseases can be prevented through stronger regulatory systems, data-driven action and cooperation across all sectors of society.
The President said the government remains focused on ensuring that food consumed in the Maldives is safe, nutritious and trustworthy. He outlined several key initiatives currently underway, including the formulation of regulations under the Food Safety Act, enhanced border food control measures and efforts to strengthen national capacity for food safety monitoring and testing.
Muizzu also expressed solidarity with communities facing humanitarian crises, including those in Gaza, where access to safe food and clean water remains a major challenge. He called on the international community to work together to address such issues through stronger cooperation and adherence to international standards.
World Food Safety Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the importance of preventing, detecting and managing foodborne risks, helping to improve public health and food security worldwide.
