President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting young people from the growing dangers associated with tobacco use, pledging to continue strengthening measures aimed at reducing smoking-related harm across the Maldives.
The President made the remarks in a social media post shared to mark World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31. In his message, he underscored the government’s determination to build a healthier society by addressing the public health challenges posed by tobacco products.
Highlighting recent policy initiatives, President Muizzu noted that the Maldives became the first country in the world to begin implementing a generational tobacco ban following the prohibition of e-cigarettes and vaping products. He described the move as part of a broader effort to curb tobacco consumption and safeguard future generations.
The President also warned of emerging threats, including flavoured nicotine pouches and the increasing use of artificial intelligence-driven marketing strategies that target young audiences. He stressed that authorities remain vigilant and prepared to respond to evolving tactics used to promote tobacco and nicotine products.
Reiterating the administration’s stance, President Muizzu said the government would continue working to protect young people from the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine addiction.
He further highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen tobacco control measures, including the expansion of smoking cessation clinics, the designation of smoke-free areas, and reforms to laws and regulations governing tobacco use and sales.
Calling for collective action, the President urged the public to work together towards building a healthier nation free from the harmful impacts of tobacco.
Among the measures already introduced by the government are higher duties on tobacco products and raising the minimum legal age for purchasing tobacco from 18 to 21. Authorities have also mandated the display of health warnings on tobacco products sold in the country.
In addition, the generational tobacco ban, which prohibits the sale and use of tobacco products by individuals born after 2007, officially came into effect on November 1 last year.
World No Tobacco Day is observed globally on May 31 each year to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourage efforts to reduce tobacco consumption.
