Election of New Majlis Deputy Speaker Delayed Until Tomorrow

The election to appoint a new Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis has been postponed until tomorrow following the resignation of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from the position earlier today.

The parliamentary sitting that had been scheduled for 1:00 pm today to elect a replacement has now been cancelled, according to information released by the Majlis Secretariat. A new sitting is expected to take place tomorrow, with the exact time yet to be announced.

Earlier in the day, Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla had informed members that an additional sitting would be held this afternoon. However, that decision was later reversed.

The Deputy Speaker position became vacant after Nazim stepped down shortly before a parliamentary session scheduled to debate and vote on a no-confidence motion against him. Instead of proceeding with the vote, lawmakers were informed of his resignation and the sitting was concluded without further business.

The no-confidence motion had been initiated by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), which resolved on 13 May to seek Nazim’s removal. The motion was formally submitted to parliament the following day with signatures from 73 MPs.
