Iran has voiced support for Oman after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack the Gulf nation, saying Tehran would stand by Muscat against any potential threat.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister بدر البوسعيدي (Badr Albusaidi) held a phone call following Trump’s remarks. According to Iran’s foreign ministry, the two officials discussed developments related to the Strait of Hormuz during what Tehran described as a “constructive” conversation.
Araghchi stated that Iran would stand alongside Oman “against any danger it may face,” days after Trump warned that Oman could be “blown up” if it failed to cooperate with US demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s comments came after reports that Iran was seeking the right to impose transit fees in the strategic waterway as part of a broader agreement aimed at ending the war between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance.
During a cabinet meeting, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz “belongs to everybody” and must remain open international waters, warning Oman to “behave just like everybody else.”
It remains unclear whether Trump’s remarks were intended as a serious military threat or political rhetoric.
Oman’s Role in Mediation
Oman has long acted as a mediator between Iran and the United States and has maintained close relations with both countries for decades.
Since the 1980s, Oman has also been considered an important US security partner in the Gulf region while continuing diplomatic ties with Tehran.
Reports now suggest that Iran and the United States have reached preliminary understandings aimed at reducing tensions in the region. According to the reported framework, both sides are discussing extending the current ceasefire arrangement by 60 days while negotiations continue toward a broader peace agreement.
The reported proposals include:
- Extending the ceasefire for 60 days
- Fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz
- Removing naval mines from the strait within 30 days
- Iranian assurances that it will not pursue nuclear weapons
- Possible US discussions on easing sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian assets
However, officials are still waiting for a formal response from Trump regarding the proposed understandings.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, carrying a significant share of global oil exports each day.
