Yameen Tells Eagle Hills to Scrap Rasmalé Project

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has called on UAE-based developer Eagle Hills to abandon its proposed Rasmalé mega project, accusing the company of exploiting the Maldives government and questioning the deal’s compatibility with the country’s support for Palestine.

In a statement, Yameen described Eagle Hills as a “depraved bunch” and the government as a “morally bankrupt regime” that had lost public support.

“A Jewish settlement in a 100% Muslim society that cherishes the Palestinian cause showcases your hypocrisy n depravation,” Yameen said.

“We have nothing but disdain for this project,” he added.

Yameen has repeatedly criticised the agreement between the government and Eagle Hills, arguing that the proposed development raises concerns over national sovereignty, foreign interests and the long-term rights of Maldivians over reclaimed land.

He has also called for a public referendum on the project and argued that the agreement should not bind future governments. Yameen has previously threatened legal action against officials involved in the deal. .

The agreement for the Maldives Waterfront and Marina project was signed in Dubai on September 21, with the government announcing a proposed investment of up to US$20 billion. The development is planned for approximately 500 hectares of Rasmalé and includes residential properties, hotels, a marina and commercial facilities.

The government has defended the project as a major investment intended to support economic growth and address housing needs. Eagle Hills chairman Mohamed Alabbar has said the company must comply with Maldivian laws and that the project should not proceed if public concerns cannot be adequately addressed.
