In the wake of structural reforms recently adopted by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), long-serving party loyalist and current President of the Shaviyani Foakaidhoo Council, Ahmed Anwar, has formally announced his candidacy for the MDP National Council.

Anwar, widely regarded as a cornerstone figure in Shaviyani Atoll’s political landscape, confirmed his bid through an official statement on social media, expressing his intent to contend for one of the four seats allocated to represent the atoll under the party’s newly revised charter.

A Strong Bid Rooted in Grassroots Reform

The announcement follows major structural overhauls passed during the MDP’s 5th National Congress, which overhauled representation metrics to expand regional engagement across atoll constituencies. Under the new regulations, seat allocation for the National Council aligns directly with party membership density, granting Shaviyani Atoll four representative slots.

Addressing MDP members across the atoll, Anwar framed his candidacy around ideological continuity and unified regional development:

“Along with the positive changes being brought to MDP’s policies, I intend to run as one of the 4 members elected from Sh. Atoll to the MDP National Council… The progress and development of Sh. Atoll are intertwined with the vision and blueprints of MDP’s coordinators, as well as your unity. Insha’Allah, I will represent you in the MDP National Council in alignment with your heartbeat and aspirations.”

A Proven Track Record and Decisive Electoral Mandate

Anwar’s announcement brings a wealth of grassroots governance and public administration experience to the contest. Having launched his political career early in life, he has maintained an unbroken record of party allegiance, remaining exclusively with the MDP throughout his career.

His election as President of the Shaviyani Foakaidhoo Council underscored his strong popular mandate in the region. In a competitive contest against the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate, Ali Quraish, Anwar secured victory with a clear majority:

  • Ahmed Anwar (MDP): 604 votes (52.5%) — Winner
  • Ali Quraish (PNC): 546 votes (47.5%)

In addition to his current leadership as Council President, Anwar’s history of public service across Shaviyani Atoll includes:

  • Council Governance: Prior term serving as a dedicated Member of the Sh. Foakaidhoo Island Council.
  • Healthcare Management: Leadership as the Manager of the Foakaidhoo Health Centre, overseeing essential public health service delivery for the island.

Known among constituents for a consultative, community-first leadership style, Anwar has built a reputation for driving decisions rooted in direct public engagement and transparent local governance.

Strategic Party Ties and Electoral Timeline

Anwar’s standing within the party is further reinforced by established working relationships with key MDP figures across both executive leadership and party administration. Over his career, he has collaborated closely with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former Vice President Faisal Naseem, Former MDP President Abdulla Shahid, Former Party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and former President Mohamed Nasheed.

With the MDP National Council elections officially scheduled for November 27, candidates across the nation are mobilizing to secure delegate support. Anwar’s campaign is expected to focus heavily on community engagement, leveraging his track record and popular mandate in Foakaidhoo to champion broader developmental goals for the entirety of Shaviyani Atoll within the party’s highest decision-making body.
