Man arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs to G.Dh Atoll

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle narcotics into Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The man was arrested during an operation conducted after Counter Narcotics Intelligence received information that an individual was attempting to transport drugs to various islands in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll aboard a boat travelling from Malé to the atoll.

The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Mohamed Nishaad of Dheelkushaa, Gaafu Dhaalu Vaadhoo. He was arrested on October 7 in a joint operation conducted by Thinadhoo Police and Counter Narcotics Intelligence.

During a search following his arrest, police found two rubber packets and a film canister containing substances suspected to be narcotics. The total weight of the suspected drugs was 37.99 grams.

The suspect was brought before court for a decision on his detention, and the court ordered that he be remanded in custody for 90 days.

Police are continuing to investigate the case.

Police said they are carrying out special efforts to prevent the smuggling and trafficking of narcotics.
