Makkah — Saudi Arabia carried out the annual Ghusl Al-Kaaba, the ceremonial washing of the interior of the Holy Kaaba, in a tradition that dates back to the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and remains one of the most revered religious ceremonies associated with the Grand Mosque.
The ceremony was held earlier today and was conducted on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Senior officials, scholars, imams, and representatives from Muslim countries took part in the occasion, which symbolizes the unity of the Islamic world and the deep reverence Muslims hold for the Holy Kaaba, the Qibla toward which more than a billion Muslims direct their daily prayers.
According to Saudi authorities, the interior of the Kaaba was washed using Zamzam water mixed with Taif rose water and premium fragrances. The cleansing process involved carefully washing the interior walls, marble floor, and columns with white cloths before drying the surfaces and perfuming the sacred structure with oud, musk, and incense.
Preparations for the ceremony began the previous evening, with specialized teams making arrangements inside the Kaaba and preparing the fragrant mixture used during the washing. The annual ritual forms part of a wider programme dedicated to maintaining and preserving the Grand Mosque and its historic landmarks throughout the year.
The washing of the Kaaba is regarded as one of the oldest continuing traditions in Islam. It reflects the exceptional care devoted to the holiest site in Islam and serves as a reminder of the Kaaba’s central place in the hearts of Muslims worldwide.
Although participation inside the Kaaba is limited to invited guests, the ceremony attracts widespread attention across the Muslim world. Images and footage shared by official media outlets allow millions of Muslims to witness the occasion and reflect on its spiritual significance.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque said the ceremony was carried out under established operational and technical procedures aimed at preserving the Holy Kaaba, its architectural features, and the surrounding facilities to the highest standards.
Observed annually following the Hajj season, the Ghusl Al-Kaaba remains a powerful symbol of continuity, devotion, and service to Islam’s holiest sanctuary, reinforcing the enduring bond between Muslims and their Qibla across generations.
