The Maldivian Rufiyaa has taken a major step into the digital age after the Unicode Consortium approved the country’s official currency symbol, , for inclusion in Unicode 18.0.
Developed by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the symbol is inspired by the Thaana letter “ރ” and was created to give the national currency a distinctive identity comparable to globally recognized symbols such as the dollar ($), euro (€), Indian rupee (₹), and Saudi riyal ().
Unicode is the international standard that enables characters and symbols to be displayed consistently across computers, smartphones, websites, and software. With the approval of the Rufiyaa sign under the code point U+20C2, the symbol is now on track to become part of digital systems used around the world.
Once technology companies update their operating systems, fonts, and keyboards to support Unicode 18.0, users will be able to type and display the Rufiyaa symbol directly, reducing reliance on abbreviations such as “MVR” and “Rf”.
The move represents an important milestone for the Maldives, ensuring that its national currency is recognized alongside other major world currencies in the global digital ecosystem. It also highlights the growing role of digital representation in preserving and promoting national identity.
While widespread support may take time to reach all devices and platforms, the approval marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Rufiyaa, bringing the Maldives one step closer to seeing its currency symbol displayed on screens around the world.
