Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has declared that his presidency will end in 2030, saying the decision is final amid speculation over whether he would seek to remain in power beyond his current term.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy on Saturday, El-Sisi said 2030 would mark the end of his presidential term and reaffirmed that the Egyptian Constitution would not be amended.

“The year 2030 will mark the end of my presidential term. This matter is completely settled,” he said, according to Ahram Online.

The remarks follow renewed calls from some of his supporters for him to remain in office beyond 2030, with speculation over possible constitutional changes prompting questions about his political future.

El-Sisi, who has been president since 2014, began his third term in April 2024 after winning the December 2023 election with 89.6 per cent of the vote.

Constitutional amendments approved in 2019 extended presidential terms from four to six years and allowed El-Sisi to seek a third term, placing the scheduled end of his current presidency in April 2030.

Egypt’s Constitution limits presidents to two consecutive terms under Article 140. The 2019 amendments included a special provision permitting El-Sisi to serve his current third term.

El-Sisi’s latest remarks reaffirm his stated intention to leave office when his current term expires. He has not announced a successor or outlined arrangements for the transfer of power.
