The Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations has unanimously endorsed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s nominations of former ministers Thoriq Ibrahim and Adam Shareef Umar as ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, respectively.
The decision was reached during a committee meeting attended by six members, where Kulhudhuffushi North MP Mohamed Daud highlighted the nominees’ extensive experience in government service and their strong academic and professional credentials. Citing their qualifications, Daud proposed approving the nominations without conducting further interviews, a recommendation that received unanimous support from committee members.
Thoriq Ibrahim was nominated to serve as Maldives’ Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates following his tenure as Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. Over the years, he has held several senior positions across multiple administrations, gaining extensive experience in public service.
Adam Shareef Umar, nominated as Ambassador to Qatar, also brings considerable government experience to the role. He most recently served as Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works and has occupied various leadership positions in previous governments.
The committee’s endorsement advances the nominations to the next stage of the appointment process. A report on the nominees will now be submitted to Parliament, where lawmakers will debate the appointments before taking a final vote.
