The Lacquer Island Football Championship 2026 concluded in spectacular fashion on 15th September, with FC Tholhiheley lifting the coveted trophy after a decisive 2-0 victory over FC Billoori in the grand final.
Hosted by the Thulhaadhoo Council and organized by Nauvin Investments, the week-long tournament brought together four of the area’s top squads—FC Billoori, Kafama United, Club Tholhiheley, and Team Advantage—for a thrilling showcase of athletic skill, local rivalry, and community spirit.
A Pitch Battle and a Regal Finish:
FC Tholhiheley delivered a masterclass performance in the final match, controlling the tempo early on and breaking through FC Billoori’s defense with a opening goal in the first half. FC Billoori fought valiantly to equalize, pressing forward in the second half, but FC Tholhiheley capitalized on a late counter-attack to seal the 2-0 win and lock up the championship title.
The tournament reached its ceremonial peak immediately following the match with a grand closing ceremony attended by local leaders, organizers, and enthusiastic supporters.
Constituent Member of Parliament Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru graced the closing event as the chief guest, joining members of the Thulhaadhoo Council and Nauvin Investments to present the championship trophy, medals, and individual awards to the outstanding players of the tournament.

The tournament not only brought sports entertainment to the island but also highlighted Thulhaadhoo’s rich cultural identity. Located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, the island is famed across the archipelago as the sole remaining hub for traditional Maldivian lacquerware (liyelaa jehun).
