President Dismisses Claims of Vice President’s Removal as ‘Fabricated Political Rumours’

President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has strongly rejected allegations circulating among opposition figures that Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef is set to be removed from office, describing the claims as entirely false and politically motivated.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Monday, President Muizzu was asked about various allegations raised by opposition groups following his recent private visit to Singapore.

Responding to the query, President Muizzu said the rumours being spread by the opposition had no basis in reality, characterising them as fabrications that go beyond ordinary political misinformation.

“The claims that Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef is being removed fall into that same category. These are not normal political discussions or even party politics. This is a completely different level of political fabrication,”

the President said.

He further criticised what he described as attempts to manufacture controversy, questioning the motives behind the spread of such rumours.

According to President Muizzu, the current political landscape lacks a responsible opposition capable of engaging in constructive political discourse. Instead, he said, opposition groups have become focused on spreading gossip and unsubstantiated allegations.

“The opposition today is driven by rumours rather than facts. Much of what is being circulated contains no truth and is disconnected from reality.”

he said.

The President also expressed concern about the state of political debate in the country, claiming that certain political figures and their associates spend significant time promoting narratives that lack evidence.

He added that there is currently no credible opposition force in the Maldives and accused opposition politicians of showing little interest in presenting factual information to the public.
