Campaign activities for the opposition MDP’s upcoming chairperson election are gaining momentum, with former President Mohamed Nasheed and Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem emerging as the most prominent contenders.
The election is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 12, with candidates actively travelling across the country to meet party members and secure support ahead of the vote.
Three candidates are contesting the position:
- Mohamed Nasheed (Candidate No. 1)
- Ibrahim Mohamed (Candidate No. 2)
- Meekail Ahmed Naseem (Candidate No. 3)
While all three candidates remain in the race, the campaign has largely centred around Nasheed and Meekail, both of whom have attracted visible backing from senior party figures and grassroots members. Supporters from various regions have been participating in campaign events as the candidates continue outreach efforts throughout the Maldives.
MDP has published the final voter registry for the election, showing that 15,928 members are eligible to cast their ballots. The party noted that members who leave the party before polling day will be removed from the list.
To facilitate voting, MDP has arranged 241 ballot boxes nationwide, including polling stations across Malé and the atolls. An additional ballot box will also be placed in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for members residing abroad.
The chairperson election follows the resignation of former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail. Until a new chairperson is elected, Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa is serving in the role on an interim basis.
According to the latest figures from the Elections Commission, MDP remains the country’s second-largest political party, with 43,784 registered members.
