Weather Alert for Eid Returnees: Rough Seas Expected Across Northern and Central Atolls

The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that sea conditions across the northern and central atolls are expected to remain rough today as large numbers of people begin returning to Malé following the Eid holidays.

With government offices and schools set to reopen tomorrow after the nine-day Eid break, many travellers have already started making their journeys back from the islands.

According to the Met Office, winds in the northern and central regions are forecast to blow from the southwest and west at speeds ranging between 10 and 20 miles per hour. Gusts could reach up to 30 miles per hour at times, leading to rough sea conditions.

Authorities have advised ferry, launch and other sea travellers to exercise caution and closely monitor weather conditions before departing.

The Met Office also stated that the ongoing southwest monsoon is bringing rain and occasional thunderstorms to various parts of the country. While seas in the northern and central atolls are expected to be moderately rough to rough, calmer conditions are forecast for the southern atolls.

Demand for domestic travel services has surged as holidaymakers return to the capital, prompting transport operators to schedule additional ferry and launch services on several routes.

Officials have urged travellers to follow all safety guidelines during this busy travel period and remain alert to changing weather conditions.
