Malé, Maldives – May 18, 2026 – In a significant milestone for Maldivian aviation and tourism, the national carrier Maldivian has inaugurated its first-ever direct flights between the Maldives and Australia, marking the inaugural nonstop air link between the two nations.

The new seasonal service operates between Velana International Airport in Malé and Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), slashing travel time to approximately 11 hours compared to previous connecting itineraries that often exceeded 15-18 hours. The inaugural flight departed Malé on Sunday evening, with the return leg scheduled shortly after, ushering in a new era of convenient travel for tourists and business travelers alike.

Operated using Maldivian’s newly acquired Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft, the weekly flights feature both Business Class with lie-flat seats and Economy options, offering enhanced comfort for the long-haul journey. The route is initially running as a six-month seasonal service in partnership with Australian travel company Luxury Escapes, with packages available exclusively through the operator. Frequencies may increase based on demand.

“This direct connection represents a major step in our international expansion and strengthens ties with one of our key emerging source markets,” a Maldivian spokesperson said. “Australians have long loved the Maldives, and now they can reach paradise faster and more comfortably than ever before.”

The Maldives, renowned worldwide for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and luxury overwater resorts, has seen growing interest from Australian travelers in recent years. Officials project the new route could bring an additional 11,000 visitors annually from Australia, providing a substantial boost to the island nation’s tourism-dependent economy.

Melbourne was selected as the launch destination following careful market analysis, positioning it as a gateway for travelers from across Australia. The development aligns with broader efforts by the Maldivian government and Island Aviation Services Limited to expand long-haul connectivity and diversify tourism sources.

Travelers have welcomed the announcement enthusiastically, citing the convenience of direct access to the Maldives’ 1,000+ islands without the hassle of layovers in hubs like Singapore, Doha, or Colombo.

As the flights take off, this partnership not only enhances accessibility but also promises deeper cultural and economic exchanges between the two countries. Maldivian plans to monitor performance closely, with potential for year-round operations or additional Australian cities in the future.

For bookings and packages, travelers are encouraged to contact Luxury Escapes or visit Maldivian’s official channels.
