Velana International Airport (VIA) has achieved a new milestone after recording its highest monthly volume of sea-to-air transshipment cargo, handling more than 621 tonnes in a single month.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates VIA, said the record highlights the continued growth of the airport’s sea-to-air and air-to-air cargo services. Overall transshipment cargo handled during the month exceeded 2,000 tonnes, marking the highest monthly total ever recorded at the airport.
According to MACL, the 621 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo processed during the month is the largest monthly volume since the service was introduced, reflecting increasing demand for the airport’s cargo operations.
The company said the achievement further strengthens VIA’s position as a strategic logistics hub in the Indian Ocean, improving cargo connectivity between the Maldives and key markets across Asia, Europe and beyond.
The government has previously identified the Maldives’ strategic location as a major advantage for developing a regional cargo transshipment hub. Industry officials have also noted that the sea-to-air logistics model—where cargo arrives by sea before being transported by air—is widely used internationally as it helps lower transportation costs while reducing delivery times.
