Iran has launched a large-scale missile and drone operation targeting 85 sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, claiming the strikes were aimed at key US military facilities in the two Gulf states.
In a statement, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its naval and aerospace forces carried out coordinated attacks against what it described as 85 “critical US military facilities” using missiles and drones.
According to the IRGC, the primary targets included the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
The IRGC said the operation was launched in retaliation for earlier US airstrikes on military and non-military sites in Iran’s Hormozgan and Mahshahr regions.
Iran also described the attacks as a response to what it called a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
The IRGC further claimed the US strikes were intended to overshadow the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the attacks as an attempt to divert attention from what it called a “historic event.”
Iran has not immediately provided details on the extent of the damage caused by the strikes, while US and Gulf authorities have yet to release a full assessment of the attacks.
