U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed not to develop nuclear weapons as part of a reported agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Trump made the remarks while announcing what he described as an agreement aimed at halting the recent hostilities between the United States and Iran.
According to Trump, Iran has agreed not only to stop pursuing nuclear weapons but also not to acquire them in the future.
“I don’t know if anyone has heard this, but we have stopped the war. And they [Iran] have agreed that they will not develop nuclear weapons. That is something we have always wanted,” Trump said.
He added that Iran had also agreed not to obtain nuclear weapons, describing the commitment as a key part of the understanding reached between the two sides.
Despite Trump’s claims that an agreement has been reached, neither the United States nor Iran has formally signed any deal. Trump had earlier said that details, including a timeline for signing the agreement, would be announced later, but no further information has been released.
The reported breakthrough follows days of military escalation between the two countries. Last week, the United States launched strikes on Iranian targets after accusing Iran of shooting down a U.S. military helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, Iran carried out attacks against U.S. military facilities across the Middle East. The two sides subsequently exchanged further strikes, raising fears of a wider regional conflict before the recent diplomatic developments emerged.
However, Iranian officials have yet to publicly confirm Trump’s claims regarding an agreement or any commitment related to its nuclear programme. For now, the details and status of the reported deal remain unclear.
