Visit Maldives to Showcase Traditional Island Eid Celebrations from R. Meedhoo

The spirit and traditions of a Maldivian island Eid will take center stage this festive season as Visit Maldives prepares to broadcast live coverage of Eid celebrations from R. Meedhoo to audiences around the world.

According to Visit Maldives, live coverage from the island will be shared across its social media platforms and digital channels from May 26 to May 30, highlighting the traditions, atmosphere and community celebrations that make Eid in the Maldives unique.

The campaign aims to give international audiences a deeper understanding of the Maldives beyond its luxury tourism image by showcasing the country’s living traditions and island culture.

Throughout the five-day initiative, Visit Maldives teams will provide live updates, feature segments and behind-the-scenes storytelling from Meedhoo, documenting cultural practices and celebrations that continue to shape island communities.

Among the traditions set to be featured is Vedhuma Dhiyun, a longstanding custom where islanders formally seek permission from elders and community leaders before beginning Eid festivities. The tradition reflects the strong communal values preserved in Maldivian island life.

The campaign will also showcase Bodu Mas, one of the Maldives’ most recognized Eid traditions. The celebration centers around a giant fish structure crafted using woven coconut palm leaves and carried around the island in a festive gathering rooted in the country’s seafaring heritage.

Another key highlight is Maali Neshun, a traditional cultural performance where participants dress as mythical figures and spirits using handmade costumes crafted from coconut leaves and other local materials. Accompanied by boduberu drumming, the performances are known for their energetic and visually striking atmosphere.

Visit Maldives also plans to feature Koadi Kendun, a traditional community celebration involving decorated wooden structures made from coconut palm materials, combining performance, creativity and friendly competition.

Speaking about the initiative, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives, Ibrahim Shiuree, said showcasing living traditions and island communities remains an important part of promoting the Maldives internationally.

“The Maldives is shaped not only by its natural beauty, but also by the traditions, people, and communities that continue to preserve our cultural identity,” he said.

Shiuree also thanked the people of Meedhoo, especially residents of Hulhangu ward and Irumathi ward, along with the Meedhoo Council, for supporting the initiative and helping showcase the island’s Eid celebrations to a global audience.

Following the live coverage period, Visit Maldives plans to continue the campaign through long-form storytelling content on its YouTube platform from June onwards, featuring interviews, cultural stories and in-depth coverage from Meedhoo.

Through the initiative, Visit Maldives aims to further position the Maldives as a destination defined not only by its natural scenery, but also by its traditions, island communities and cultural heritage.
