Reports from the Mediterranean say that Israeli forces intercepted ships from the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” a group carrying humanitarian aid for people in Gaza living under blockade.
A spokesperson for the flotilla said Israeli forces stopped the vessels while they were sailing in international waters. They boarded the ships, detained about 100 crew members, and prevented them from continuing toward Gaza. Some aid supplies were reportedly damaged or thrown into the sea, and the fleet was forced to change its route.
Israeli media reported that the interception happened near Cyprus, and around 100 people were detained during the operation.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is an activist-led international effort involving volunteers from many countries. It aims to deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies to Gaza.
This is not the first attempt the flotilla has tried several times before, but Israeli forces have repeatedly stopped the ships and taken action against the crews and cargo.
This was the fourth attempt, with the ships setting off this time from Marmaris in Turkey.
