The Elections Commission has imposed a fine of MVR 100,000 on former President Abdulla Yameen’s party, the People’s National Front, over its ongoing series of nighttime protests.
In a letter sent to PNF President Abdulla Yameen, the commission said the party had repeatedly violated Article 45 of the Political Parties Act. The fine was issued under Article 49 of the same law.
The commission also warned PNF and its members against carrying out unlawful activities during political events, adding that further legal action may be taken against individuals if such violations continue.
According to the Elections Commission, PNF and its supporters had repeatedly breached laws and regulations during recent political activities. The commission said it had previously advised the party and invited officials for discussions, but the party had not complied.
The action comes after a series of nightly protests by PNF supporters, including demonstrations where participants were seen carrying a sofa through the streets of Malé. The protests began following the release of Adhadhu’s “Aisha” documentary, which included allegations against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The commission’s decision also follows recent restrictions placed on Channel 13, which was earlier ordered to stop live coverage of the PNF protests.
