Israel Detains Jerusalem Grand Mufti

Israeli forces detained Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine, following Friday prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli troops took Sheikh Hussein into custody shortly after he delivered the Friday sermon and led worshippers in the weekly congregational prayers at Islam’s third-holiest site.

Local sources said the detention took place immediately after the conclusion of the prayers. Israeli authorities have not publicly announced the reason for the arrest.

As of Friday, there were no immediate details regarding where Sheikh Hussein had been taken or whether any charges had been filed against him.

The detention comes amid continuing tensions surrounding the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which has remained a focal point of confrontations and heightened security measures in recent months.
