Local Tourism Association of B. Fulhadhoo Launched to Champion Sustainable Community Tourism in Baa Atoll

Fulhadhoo, Maldives – July 2026 — A new community-led initiative is set to boost responsible tourism on the idyllic local island of Fulhadhoo in Baa Atoll. The Local Tourism Association of B. Fulhadhoo (LTABF) has been established to promote sustainable development, empower local residents, and preserve the island’s pristine natural environment while welcoming visitors to experience authentic Maldivian island life.52

Fulhadhoo, home to fewer than 300 residents and located within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, is renowned for its stunning white-sand beaches, vibrant house reefs teeming with marine life (including baby sharks, turtles, and colorful coral gardens), and laid-back atmosphere. The LTABF aims to ensure that growing interest in the island benefits the local community directly while protecting its unique ecosystem.14

Key Objectives of LTABF:

  • Sustainable Tourism Practices: Collaborating with guesthouses such as Island Luxury and Zen Inn to promote eco-friendly operations, coral restoration efforts, and responsible snorkeling and excursion activities.
  • Community Empowerment: Providing training and opportunities for locals in tourism-related skills, building on successful models where island businesses have already trained dozens of residents.
  • Cultural Preservation: Encouraging respectful tourism that aligns with local customs, including recent measures by the island council to maintain community standards.
  • Promotion of Local Experiences: Supporting excursion providers (such as Fulhadhoo Excursions) offering activities like dolphin watching, fishing trips, sandbank visits, and guided snorkeling.17

A representative for the association highlighted its mission: “We want to showcase the real Maldives — not just the luxury resorts, but the warm hospitality, rich culture, and untouched beauty of our island, all while ensuring tourism supports our community for generations to come.”

The launch comes at a time of increasing visitor interest in local islands as alternatives to high-end resorts, with improved access via speedboat from Malé or seaplane connections to nearby islands in Baa Atoll.

Travelers interested in visiting Fulhadhoo can look forward to a peaceful escape with pristine beaches, excellent snorkeling right off the shore, and genuine interactions with locals. The LTABF encourages visitors to engage responsibly and support community-run businesses.

For more information, follow the association on social media (@ltabf on Instagram) or reach out to local partners on the island.

This development positions Fulhadhoo as a model for community-owned tourism in the Maldives, balancing economic growth with environmental and cultural stewardship.
