President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, freelancers, artisans and local entrepreneurs by expanding access to opportunities, financing and digital tools across the Maldives.
In a message issued to mark Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, the President said the strength of the Maldivian economy does not rest solely on large businesses, but on the broad participation of people across different sectors and communities.
He said the government’s national vision, Maldives 2.0, aims to diversify the economy, widen participation in digital markets and build a financial system that serves businesses of all sizes.
The President noted that the administration’s goal is to grow the digital and creative sectors to 15 percent of national productivity, with MSMEs playing a central role in achieving that target.
Muizzu also highlighted efforts to create new opportunities beyond the capital, including the establishment of regional creative centres in B. Thulhaadhoo, Dh. Rinbudhoo and GDh. Gadhdhoo, as well as plans to develop a dedicated Creator Hub in Malé.
He further said the outcomes of the Addu Business Dialogue are already beginning to take shape, with plans progressing to establish the country’s first Trade Acceleration Zone in Addu City, covering Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. The zone is expected to begin operations in 2027 with a package of special incentives.
The President also highlighted the strategic partnership with Alibaba, noting that Maldivian creators registered under Authentic Maldives have been given opportunities to sell their products through the platform.
On financial inclusion, the President said the government is working to provide Shariah-compliant financial assistance under the SME Digital Initiative, including support for working capital, business assets, creative economy development and women-led enterprises.
He also pointed to digital finance services such as Bank of Maldives’ Swipe wallet and the availability of PayPal services in the Maldives, saying such tools will help local businesses, freelancers and entrepreneurs access the global digital economy more easily.
The President said the government has designated 2026 and 2027 as years of special focus for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, with policies, financing mechanisms and digital infrastructure being strengthened to support business growth.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu extended greetings to MSMEs, freelancers, creators and self-employed workers across the Maldives, saying the country’s economic future depends on creating opportunities that are accessible to all.
