A woman remanded in custody over an alleged drug import case has told the court that the detention cell where she is being held does not have a toilet, while also requesting medical treatment due to her deteriorating mental health.

The case involves 29-year-old Aminath Roona of Bijilee Ufaa, K. Thulusdhoo, who is accused of importing illegal drugs into the Maldives. Another suspect, Alya Sharsa Naseer, 25, of Muthi Ge, Malé, was also arrested in connection with the investigation.

The Criminal Court on Saturday ordered Roona’s remand to be extended by 20 days, while Alya’s detention was extended by 10 days.

According to the court order, Roona said she is being held in solitary confinement and that the cell does not have toilet facilities. She also told the court that her mental health has worsened and requested appropriate medical care.

The prosecution submitted multiple pieces of evidence supporting the ongoing investigation, including statements from Customs and Police officers, forensic analysis reports of the suspected narcotics, and Scene of Crime Officers’ reports.

Investigators also presented travel history records, mobile phone extraction reports and an initial financial investigation report as evidence.

Court documents further state that Alya claimed she had met Roona while seeking medical treatment. Alya also alleged that Roona had groomed her into participating in the alleged offence.

According to Alya’s statement, Roona purchased her airline ticket and arranged for her to travel overseas. She further claimed that the luggage involved in the case had been brought at Roona’s instruction.

The investigation into the alleged drug import case remains ongoing.
