President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the long-standing parking shortage in the Greater Malé region will be substantially resolved once the full Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project is completed.
Speaking on the second episode of PSM News’ Nation Chat podcast, President Muizzu described poor road conditions, inadequate parking and persistent flooding as three of the biggest challenges facing residents of the capital.
He explained that the Boduthakurufaanu Magu project is designed to address these issues by reclaiming land along the northern coastline and constructing a modern two-way asphalt roadway. The current phase covers sections two to five, stretching from Izzuddin Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal.
According to the President, completion of the ongoing phase will mark a major milestone in the overall project, with work on the next stage expected to begin immediately afterwards.
Muizzu said transforming the outer road into a wider two-way corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion by diverting vehicles away from the capital’s narrow inner roads. The section currently under construction will also include a dedicated motorcycle parking area with capacity for approximately 500 vehicles, which the government believes will significantly reduce parking difficulties in the area.
The President also acknowledged delays to the government’s planned multi-storey parking facility, explaining that the project has been held back by the absence of foreign financing. He said the administration is now exploring options to fund the project through the state budget instead of relying on external loans.
In addition, Muizzu noted that private companies have already been contracted to develop parking facilities in designated areas of Hulhumalé as part of broader efforts to improve parking availability across the Greater Malé region.
