MALE, Maldives — The Maldives and the United States have held high-level discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors, including trade, economic development, tourism, and maritime security.
The talks took place during a courtesy call by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S. Paul Kapur on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office on Wednesday.
According to the President’s Office, the meeting highlighted the longstanding partnership between the two countries as 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United States.
Both sides reflected on six decades of friendship and cooperation and explored opportunities to further deepen ties in areas of mutual interest.
During the discussions, Kapur expressed the United States’ interest in enhancing collaboration in trade and economic development, strengthening tourism-related partnerships, and working together on regional security and maritime security initiatives.
President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to engaging with international partners under the government’s “Maldives First” policy. He emphasized that the country remains open to development projects and economic partnerships that contribute to national development, economic diversification, and tangible benefits for the Maldivian people.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their readiness to work together on initiatives that serve the interests of both countries and further strengthen Maldives–U.S. relations.
The discussions come as the Maldives and the United States celebrate six decades of diplomatic ties, underscoring a shared commitment to expanding cooperation and addressing regional opportunities and challenges through partnership.
