Iran’s military says it has carried out warning strikes using drones and missiles against U.S. naval vessels operating near Oman.
According to Iranian officials, the warning attacks were launched in response to what they described as interference by the U.S. Navy against ships traveling through the area.
The U.S. military said that a vessel targeted by American enforcement measures was intercepted while sailing in the Indian Ocean.
According to U.S. officials, the ship was transporting goods to Iran, and American naval forces have stated that they will continue intercepting vessels they believe are violating U.S.-imposed restrictions.
Following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to what it described as an illegal war launched by the United States in coordination with Israel on February 28, the United States reportedly imposed a maritime blockade around Iran, preventing the export and import of goods.
During the conflict, Iranian retaliatory strikes are said to have caused damage to billions of dollars worth of U.S. military equipment, according to estimates by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
A study by CSIS found that the conflict in the Middle East, which began on February 28, resulted in losses to the U.S. military estimated at between $2.3 billion and $2.8 billion. These figures reportedly account only for damage to military equipment.
The estimates do not include damage to U.S. military facilities in the Middle East, specialized equipment, or naval assets. As a result, analysts believe the actual total cost of losses suffered by the U.S. military could be significantly higher than the figures cited above.
