Police have completed their investigation into a drug case involving three Maldivian film stars arrested in Vilimalé and forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office, releasing all four suspects from custody.
The suspects were arrested on October 8 during a special anti-narcotics operation at a house in Vilimalé. The three film stars are Ahmed Azmeel, known as Azey; Ismail Jumaih; and Mohammed Vishaal, known as Roman. Shahil Mohamed, Azmeel’s younger brother, was also arrested.
Police had accused the four men of drug use, possession and trafficking. They were initially remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court.
The Maldives Police Service confirmed that the investigation has now been completed and the case sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office. Police said three of the suspects had already been released after the investigative work concerning them was completed, while the remaining suspect was also due to be released on the day of the announcement.
“Once the case proceeds through the court process, if an order is issued to keep them in custody for a further period, we will act accordingly,” police said.
According to details presented in court during the remand proceedings, officers forced open the locked door of the room where the suspects were staying. Upon entering, they reportedly found narcotics openly displayed on a table.
Officers who attended the scene told the court that the preliminary weight of the seized substances met the legal threshold for drug trafficking.
The report also noted that, with the exception of Jumaih, the other three suspects had previous records involving arrests and detention in connection with narcotics cases.
