Iran launched missiles and drones towards US military assets in Kuwait and Bahrain after the United States carried out air strikes on Iran’s strategically important Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces conducted what it described as “self-defence” strikes against targets on Qeshm Island following attempted Iranian attacks against regional neighbours and maritime traffic.
CENTCOM said two Iranian ballistic missiles fired towards Kuwait either fell short or broke apart before reaching their targets, while three missiles launched towards Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini air defence systems. The US military later reported that an additional wave of Iranian drones targeting American forces in Kuwait was also successfully shot down, with no casualties or damage reported.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted US military assets and bases in Kuwait and Bahrain in retaliation for the American strikes on Qeshm Island. Explosions were also reported in Qeshm city, according to Iranian media.
Despite the exchange of attacks, Washington insists that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran remains in effect. US officials described the military action on Qeshm as defensive and maintained that diplomatic contacts between the two countries are continuing.
Qeshm Island has become one of Iran’s most significant military strongholds due to its location at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments. The island is believed to house underground military facilities, coastal missile systems and IRGC infrastructure used to monitor and potentially disrupt shipping traffic through the strategic waterway.
Its military importance has made Qeshm a frequent flashpoint in tensions between Tehran and Washington, with the island increasingly viewed as a key front line in the broader confrontation over regional security and maritime trade.
