Maldives and Japan Pledge Closer Cooperation as Ambassador Mahloof Begins Diplomatic Mission

Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ayano Kunimitsu, has reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Maldives during a courtesy meeting with the newly appointed Maldivian Ambassador to Japan, Ahmed Mahloof.

The meeting took place on May 29 following Ambassador Mahloof’s formal presentation of credentials to the Japanese government. State Minister Kunimitsu welcomed Ambassador Mahloof to his new role and expressed confidence that bilateral relations would continue to grow through close cooperation across a range of sectors.

She highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries, noting that the Maldives remains an important partner in Japan’s vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). Kunimitsu also referenced Japan’s continued support for the Maldives through development and infrastructure projects, including assistance provided for the improvement of Malé’s coastal protection systems.

Ambassador Mahloof thanked Japan for its longstanding economic cooperation and support to the Maldives. He emphasized his commitment to further deepening relations between the two nations, particularly as the Maldives and Japan prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.

During the meeting, the two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues. Kunimitsu underscored the importance of preserving a rules-based international order and outlined Japan’s updated FOIP policy. She further noted Japan’s interest in continuing cooperation with the Maldives in areas such as maritime security and regional stability.

The discussions reflected the shared commitment of both countries to enhancing bilateral cooperation and expanding partnership opportunities in the years ahead.
