Ahmed Nazim, the parliamentary representative for Dhiggaru constituency, has resigned from his position as Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis shortly before lawmakers were set to debate a motion seeking his removal.
His resignation was submitted minutes before today’s parliamentary sitting, where members were scheduled to consider a no-confidence motion filed by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), which holds a commanding majority in the legislature.
The move effectively halted the planned vote, as Nazim vacated the post before the motion could be debated.
Speaking after his resignation, Nazim dismissed the allegations raised against him and insisted the claims lacked merit. However, he did not elaborate further on the accusations during his remarks.
With the Deputy Speaker position now vacant, the Majlis is expected to begin procedures to elect a replacement in line with parliamentary regulations.
Nazim’s departure marks another significant development within the parliamentary leadership structure, as the ruling PNC continues to strengthen its influence in the legislature through its overwhelming majority.
