The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued an Orange Weather Alert extending from Kaafu (Male’) Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, forecasting torrential rainfall and severe flooding across the central region over the coming hours.
According to meteorological authorities, the affected central atolls are experiencing heavy downpours accompanied by squally weather, strong wind gusts, and rough sea conditions. Due to the rapid accumulation of rainwater in several residential areas, emergency services including the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have deployed personnel on the ground to assist affected communities.
Active Emergency Operations and Field Response
Police officers have been actively patrolling flooded streets to assist citizens, manage traffic disruptions, and stack sandbags at the entrances of homes and vulnerable buildings to prevent floodwaters from seeping inside. Authorities are advising households to secure electrical appliances and move valuable items to higher ground.
Simultaneously, MNDF Fire and Rescue Service teams have been mobilized across flooded locations. Firefighters and military personnel are working to stack sandbags around commercial premises and homes, while operating high-capacity water pumps to clear waterlogged streets and drain critical flooded areas.
Public Advisory
Authorities strongly urge residents in low-lying areas and maritime travelers to exercise extreme caution and take immediate safety measures. Members of the public requiring assistance or flood mitigation support are advised to contact emergency services promptly.
