A 31-year-old Bangladeshi man who jumped into the sea from the Sinamalé Bridge has been placed under detention for five days by the Criminal Court.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning. Following the report, divers from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Malé Area Command’s Coast Guard Second Squadron were deployed to search for the man.
The divers found him holding onto one of the bridge’s pillars. He was rescued and taken aboard an MNDF Coast Guard harbour craft before being handed over to the Maldives Police Service.
Police subsequently sought a detention order from the Criminal Court. Judge Nazir Muazzamil ordered that the man be detained for five days.
According to the court order, the man is currently admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and is receiving medical treatment.
The detention request alleges that the man attempted to cause harm to himself. The court also cited concerns that releasing him could pose a risk to public safety.
The court ordered that he remain in detention until Tuesday under the Criminal Procedure Act. The detention order also states that he is residing in the Maldives in violation of immigration regulations.
He is to be brought before the court again once his medical condition improves.
