The Maldives and China will hold a series of exhibitions showcasing the two countries’ maritime history and cultural heritage next year.
The exhibitions will be held in the Maldives as well as in several cities across China.
An important agreement to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in preserving Maldivian culture and heritage was signed with China’s Tianjin National Maritime Museum.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed, while Tianjin National Maritime Museum Director Wang Long signed on behalf of China.
Under the agreement, a special exhibition by the Tianjin National Maritime Museum will be held at the National Museum of the Maldives early next year. A separate exhibition featuring Maldivian heritage will also be held at museums in several Chinese cities.
According to Minister Heena, this will be the first time the National Museum has organised an exhibition of this nature outside the Maldives.
Speaking to PS News, the minister said the exhibitions will highlight the development of maritime travel and the maritime sector, while showcasing the historical links and exchanges that developed between the Maldives and China through the Maritime Silk Road, dating back to ancient times.
The two sides have also agreed to conduct joint research on archaeological sites and artefacts found across different parts of the Maldives.
The minister said discussions were also held on providing technical assistance and training for Maldivian artists, heritage professionals and other staff working in the field, as well as technical support to further research, preserve and maintain the country’s cultural heritage.
Minister Heena said the exhibitions and joint research would help increase international awareness of the Maldives’ rich cultural and historical heritage.
She added that showcasing the Maldives as a country with a long and significant history on the international stage, while ensuring its cultural heritage is preserved for future generations, is an important part of these efforts.
