A US service member was killed in northern Iraq while conducting a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
According to CENTCOM, the incident occurred on July 18 during an operation to safely dispose of the unexploded drone munition.
The announcement comes as US forces continue to face mounting casualties amid the escalating conflict with Iran.
Earlier, CENTCOM confirmed that two US service members were killed and another was reported missing following an Iranian attack on US forces in Jordan.
In a further update, the command said US military personnel later located unidentified human remains at the site after an extensive search.
“After a thorough search, US military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing,” CENTCOM said.
The latest death marks another blow to US forces as hostilities with Iran continue to intensify across the Middle East.
